Kure Beach NC - Surfing Lessons

Kure Beach NC is sandwiched between Carolina Beach and Fort Fisher.  At the center of town there is a popular fishing pier that extends 712 feet out over the ocean.  The Kure Beach Pier is one of the oldest piers in North Carolina and was rebuilt in 1997.  The pier features a grill, shop, and arcade. In the summer months, you’re likely to catch blues, spanish, spots, croakers, pompano, sheepshead, flounder and king, just to mention a few!  Ask anyone around town to point you to the rocks.  It’s a great spot for flounder fishing.

Kure Beach is a great place to get outside and try a new sport while enjoying nature at its finest.  Rent a kayak for the day and paddle amongst a wide array of aquatic life including Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. 

There are hiking trails near-by including the basin trail at the Fort Fisher Recreation Park.  This trail meanders through marsh areas where you’ll be able to observe a variety of bird species and then end at The Basin.  Don’t forget your bugspray!  The Basin is also a great spot to launch a kayak or canoe if you prefer to stay sound-side while paddling.  The roads around town are nice and flat, so dust off an old beach cruiser and go for a ride.  For the young and the young at heart, head over to Mike Chappell Park for a little skateboarding!  If it’s been a few decades since you last skated, its still fun just to go and watch the youngsters skate the bowl.

Just south of Kure Beach, you’ll stumble upon Fort Fisher complete with a State Historic Site and State Recreation Area.  The Historic Site sits amongst twisting live oak trees and was the largest of the Confederacy’s earthwork fortifications during the Civil War.  The Recreation Area has 4 miles of wide unspoiled beach, a visitor’s center, restrooms, and snack bar. 

Fort Fisher is also home to the largest of the three North Carolina Aquariums.  Renovated in 2002, the facility continues to add new exhibits, programs and activities. More than 2,500 animals are on display, including alligators, venomous snakes, sharks, stingrays, moray eels, seahorses, sea turtles and colorful reef creatures.  Live animal presentations, feedings, and dialogues with divers in the large ocean tank take place throughout the day.

There are a few restaurants here in the center of town including Freddie’s, a quaint Italian eatery, which is a nice change of pace if you’ve been eating seafood every night of your vacation.  From the center of town, a charming boardwalk with benches extends north along the beach and is well-lit at night.  A casual stroll, ice cream cone in hand, makes for the perfect ending to a perfect day at the beach.

Kure Beach is just one of the many pristine beaches of Southeastern North Carolina, which is ranked among the top 12 vacation spots in North America.  The clear warm water averages in the low 80’s throughout the summer months, making it an ideal location in which to learn the sport of surfing through our Carolina Surf School.
