Plastic Pollution: the Numbers

Did you know that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans each year? Did you know that twenty countries are responsible for more than 80% of this pollution? The United States is number twenty on that list, responsible for over 750,000 pounds of that plastic. Though we are not nearly as bad as China, who trashes a whopping 2.4 million tons into the water, there are still many ways we can work to cut down our own waste. After all, we Americans do not want to be the best of the worst, do we? These statistics got me wondering, how many pounds of this plastic can be attributed to sunglasses that have been lost? Though I was...

Spring Breakers: Part III

As we are quickly approaching spring break and the end of this series, I figured it is only natural that I highlight the hotspot for college students near where my brothers and I were raised. If you are looking for an educational and entertaining destination Charleston, South Carolina needs to be on your list. If you are interested in some hands-on history during your break from classes then you should check out the historic battlegrounds of Fort Sumter. There is also a very interesting tour of the U.S.S. Yorktown that you can take if you make your way over to Patriot’s Point. The best part about having options like these is if you are plagued with poor weather then you...

Spring Breakers: Part II

If you are looking for less of a traditional college spring break experience then you should hit the slopes. Though I would love to recommend some of my favorite local destinations, the conditions in Tahoe this year are mediocre at best, and it is certainly not worth it to spend the money for slushy snow. However, there are a variety of other destinations that will allow you to get your fill of fresh pow this Spring Break. One of my top recommendations would be to purchase a package and head to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This site offers a variety of different packages, at different resorts in the Rockies, for a reasonable price. Another way to cut costs is to rent...

So, if you didn’t already have Panama City Beach on your list for a college spring break, you should put it there. The travel channel has ranked this town in Florida in the top ten for college spring break destinations. There are plenty of places to party during your stay, like Spinnaker’s on the beach. However, if you are interested in something more secluded, Shell Island, in St. Andrew’s State Park is the place to go. You can find a shuttle schedule and other important information here. As for food, you should...

The Tide is High, Are we Holding On?

Climate change is a hot button topic, and not just for politicians. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, 2014 brought with it the highest ocean temperatures we have seen on record. This infographic illustrates the sharp increase in water temperatures over the recent years, and NOAA has actually had to rescale this chart to showcase the data. Why are ocean temperatures relevant, you ask? Well, for starters, 90% of the global warming heat is stored in these great bodies of water. Also, consider the increase in ocean level, as polar ice caps continue to melt. This is a self-perpetuating cycle that is difficult to reverse, and it could leave towns and cities submerged. Additionally, melt zones are rising...
