Hemp: 5 benefits you should know if you like sustainable fashion.

Hemp shirts are a great sustainable clothing option.

HEMP. The WORD. So much fuss around it.  Is it legal? Yes? No? Kind of?  There’s been a lot of discussion and taboo around this.  This plant gives us so much to talk about that we could write an entire book.  But this time we are just going to approach its textile use, and why it is one of the most versatile materials that you can get for your sustainable clothing.  Here are five characteristics of the hemp fiber that make it a great choice for clothing.

  1. Hemp is antimicrobial and mold resistant.
  2. Hemp fabric softens with time while maintaining its shape.
  3. Protects you from UV.
  4. Water-resistant.
  5. Strong natural fiber.

1. Hemp is anti-microbial and mold resistant.

Heck yeah, hemp is resistant! Its fibers are spun in a way that not only makes its fabrics mold resistant, but also feel fresh to the touch. Hemp is a natural anti-microbial material, which makes your clothes stay clean longer, delaying the development of odor-causing bacteria.  Hemp clothing holds its shape, and the colors last much longer! It is one of the strongest and most durable natural fibers.

2. Hemp fabric softens with time.

You’ll look and feel like a million dollars!  Clothing made from hemp fabric is really comfortable and stylish.  Unlike your old polyester shirts, this fabric gets softer with every wash. And by softer, we don’t mean worn out.  We mean that it only gets more comfy.  This is one of the beauties of its durability.  It’s like a Dorian Greyish garment: the older it gets, the better it looks and feels.  But without the curse!

Hemp shirts are a great sustainable clothing option.

3. Hemp protects you from UV.

Do you wear polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes?  Well, the best way to protect your skin is hemp.  These clothes are tightly woven in a way that solar rays don’t enter the surface.  And because of that, no UV radiation gets to your skin.  This makes hemp clothing excellent for any outdoor activity.  Just make sure to wear sunscreen on your exposed body parts.  We don’t want you to end up with the classic T-Tan!

4. Hemp is water-resistant.

Since hemp is a partially hydrophobic fiber, it doesn’t absorb water.  It actually rejects it.  Of course it’s not for scuba diving, but it surely is water-resistant.  At least it resists the water dripping from a cool can of beer.  So it is basically perfect for chilling out since it’s spill-proof.

5. Hemp is a strong natural fiber.

This is a bit redundant after all you’ve read.  But its fabric is made of one of the strongest natural fibers.  Since it is entirely natural, hemp fiber is also biodegradable.  And since it is made without involving any toxic or unnatural processes, it won’t stick to your body when you sweat!

These are a few cool facts that may help you look at hemp from a better perspective.  And if you want to know more, you can always check out our  hemp shirts specially made for you to have the real experience.
