This year I began the Swell Life blog with an article about practicing yoga, throughout the year.  However, here I would like to focus your attention beyond the body to create balance in the mind.  The physical performance of yoga does provide a focus for the mind, as you are twisting yourself into Lotus pose it is difficult to think about the constant stream of thoughts that usually float through your head.  That said, if you do not have the time or energy to test your flexibility, meditation is a wonderful alternative.  Without the sweat, shower, or outfit change, you can bring your mind to a quieter place with simple meditation exercises.

Every article about meditation encourages you to breathe and focus on the present, while allowing your thoughts to come and go.  Though this is great advice, it is much easier said than done.  For those of you who have a difficult time quieting the background noise in your mind it might be easier to try this practice with a mantra.  Repeating this -- whatever the phrase you decide -- in your head as you inhale and exhale will allow you a focal point which keeps the distracting thoughts at bay.
